Our Actions

1 Peter 2:1-12English Standard Version (ESV)
So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:
“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,
“The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,”[a]
and
“A stone of stumbling,
    and a rock of offense.”
They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

I find it very disturbing when I hear a non-Christian complain about a Christian.  You hear things like, “they think they are so holy” or “they are so two-faced” or “they only care about themselves, their race, or their religion”, you have heard it and the list goes on and on.  As I read this scripture today I am once again reminded that my actions speak so much louder than my words but when my words don’t speak kindness, gentleness, and self-control, they trump even my actions.  What are we doing as Christians?  Do we want to grow?  If so, we must be nourished through His Word.  We must drink it up so that we may eat solid foods and be grown up in Christ. As we grow, we may find that we are rejected by man, maybe those friends that you used to hang out with no longer want to be around you or the boss that sees no point in having you around, for no apparent reason.  If you have tasted the milk and found that it was good, then grow in Him don’t worry about those who have caused you distress.  That is what the word is telling me.  That is how we become a part of the cornerstone of Christ.  Someday everyone will know of His glory and majesty but not everyone will join Him in the celebration.  We can’t decide who is chosen and who is not but this is what we can do, we can live as He would want us to live.

That may mean different things to different people but what the word says is quite clear, abstain from passions of the flesh, live honorably, produce good deeds, and glorify God!  Then, when people try to talk bad about you they will find that they really can’t.  We should live our lives, not with our nose in the air, not with a chip on our shoulder, but with love and forgiveness.  We should go the extra mile for our neighbor, our co-worker, our boss and we should not condemn lest we be condemned.  As I begin my studies in the area of Social Work, I am told over and over again to accept the client where they are.  They may not be on the side of the Lord and they may never be, that is not for me to determine but to help those who want help by first listening sounds to me what we as Christian should be doing.

As you seek Him find Him in the midst of your workplace, your school, your community and let others see His light shine through you by your actions and your words.

Seeking Him with all my heart,

Love Others

1 Peter 1:22-25
English Standard Version (ESV)

22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24 for
“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
    and the flower falls,
25
but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

We have had a beautiful summer with all the rain that we have had!  Flowers bloomed, grass was green, and the trees flourished.  I enjoyed those days of little wind, pleasant temperatures, and the wonderful sunshine but the rain is what brought the beauty.

In comparison let’s look at how we interact with other people.  Most of us like to be around people, sometimes we love the large crowds but many of us like the smaller intimate setting of just a few close friends.  Whatever the case may be, we enjoy people, but then, there is the occasional person that just continually annoys us.  The scriptures tell us that we must love them too!  In order to enjoy the beauty, we must love the rain.

All of us will pass on, go to our final resting place, or simply said, die.  While we are here we need to take in all the wonders that God has given us.  We need to remember that each person you see is a flower, a blade of grass, or a firmly planted tree but they all die.  We need to enjoy their beauty while they flourish.  I can only imagine what kind of place this world would be if we could all learn that lesson.  It is a lesson that no mankind has ever been able to learn.  God demonstrated it to us by sending His son, Jesus, to live on this earth, endure suffering, continue to love, love so much that He died on the cross for all of us!  What is even more spectacular is that He conquered death; that death that sins brings upon us, rising again on the third day, and now He is preparing a place for those who call upon His name.  Are you one of those?  If not, seek Him by calling on His name, tell Him you want to serve Him, love others, and someday live with Him eternally.

Seeking Him with all my heart,

Pleasing Our Father

1 Peter 1:14-21
English Standard Version (ESV)
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

When we do not know Christ we can do things that we do not even realize are wrong.  Have you ever been frustrated by someone who makes the same mistake over and over again?  If they do not know Christ then they have thea good reason why they do theses things, they are ignorant of the Power of Christ and we need to share that with them.  If, however, they are Christians and begin to slip away, they need to remember who their Father is.

As a child and even today, I have always wanted to please my Dad.  I did not like getting in trouble and would do all that I could do to stay in his good graces.  I still was not perfect but I strove to be as much as humanly possible.  I did not fear my dad like some children do.  He did not beat me, he was not a drunk, he was a hard workingman that I adored and still do today.  I have always longed for his acceptance in anything that I have done whether it be cooking, cleaning, or getting good grades in school.  I have always wanted him to be proud of me so I have tried to conduct myself in ways that I think he would be proud.  Not always am I perfect at this and if I know he is coming to my house, I might have to tidy up a bit!

I have a Heavenly Father that I want to make proud of me as well and I need to keep my conduct in a manner that He will smile on me in all situations.  The difference between the two is huge; one gave me physical life, the other, granted me both physical life and eternal life.  One raised me to be a good person and disciplined me along the way.  One will judge me for every act that I have done and He knows everything that I have ever done.  One only sees what I do in his presence, the other One sees what I do all the time.  Yes, I need to fear Him; out of respect for Him I should do what He would want.  He knows all things and He knows what is best for me.

I get so frustrated when I hear people complain about the way a Christian is acting.  It is usually a complaint from someone who is not a Christian and they compare all Christians by the conduct of another.  We need to be living our lives for our Father.  We need to fear Him but so many times people see Him merely as their friend.  He is their friend but He is also the Father.  We should want our Father to look down on us and smile.  Is He doing that?  As you go about life today, remember the importance of pleasing Him.  Conduct your lives in a manner that your Father would be proud.  Seek Him so that you may know Him in a deeper manner so that you will always want to please Him.

Seeking Him with all my heart,

Sheila

Trust

1 Peter 1:10-13English Standard Version (ESV)
10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action,[a] and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

In Old Testament times there were prophets in which the Holy Spirit spoke through. We can read their prophecies now and see how they came to pass with Jesus Christ.  They prophesied the coming of Christ, the place of His birth and the salvation He would bring to the world.  Yet, they did not see this come to pass, they realized it was not for them but for us.

Because of God’s great salvation to us, we need to act like we know Him.  Unlike the Israelites who roamed in the desert for 40 years because they brought the world with them.  We need to keep our focus on Him.  When our focus becomes worldly then we become just like the Israelites who chose to put their trust in idols rather than God.

As you seek Him today know that Jesus is the way to your salvation.  Trust Him and know that He is God and our mediator.

Seeking Him with all my heart,

Sheila
