Matthew 22:41-46
New
International Version 1984 (NIV1984)
41 While the Pharisees were
gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about
the Christ? Whose son is he?”
“The son of David,” they
replied.
43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him
‘Lord’? For he says,
44 “‘The Lord said to my
Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
under your feet.”’
“Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
under your feet.”’
45 If then David calls him
‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one
dared to ask him any more questions.
In this passage
Jesus made it clear to these men that they did not know as much as they thought
they did. All this time they were trying
to stump Him and know He has turned the tables.
The Pharisees, who
thought they knew it all, couldn’t answer one simple question regarding their Messiah,
whom they were watching for. They knew
the Christ was coming but they knew very little about Him. In fact, the Christ, was standing right in
front of them and they didn’t even recognize Him. They were partially correct in that the
Christ came from the line of David but He was certainly not his son.
The problem with
the Pharisees was that they were still looking for an earthly king not an
eternal King and Jesus did not fit what they thought to be king worthy. He was not a rich man, didn’t even have a
place to lay His head. He wasn’t like
most kings who disregard the poor, questionable people, instead He ate with
them. He didn’t claim power on this
earth but rather over this earth.
Our question for
today is the same one that Christ asked the Pharisees. Is the Christ we call upon the son of an
earthly man or a Heavenly Father? Are we
just like the Pharisees when we look to our Heavenly Father, thinking of
earthly matters rather than eternal matters?
Do we cry out to Him in regards to spiritual matters or do we cry out to
Him for things of this earth? He cares
for us and He knows that this life is not a perfect life so He has designed an
eternal life that is. He wants us to
depend on Him for everything yet His desire, more than anything, is that we
recognize Him for who He is. Not an
earthly king that can make us rich or drain us of our wealth, He isn’t an
earthly king that only associates with the financially rich and powerful men of
this world; He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. When we approach His throne, we need to
remember who He is and speak to Him accordingly. I don’t know about you but sometimes I ask
for the pettiest things when I pray compared to what my King can do and
provide. I ask for things of this world,
so it will be more comfortable and pleasing when I should be focused eternally. An example, when I wake up I say, Good
morning Lord, please help me get out of this bed”. Rather I should be praying, “Good morning Lord, will you please wake up
those sleepers who have not recognized you, wake up our county O Lord, so that
we may bring glory and honor to Your Name.”
Today as you seek
Him may you remember, He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the Almighty
One, who is and was and is to come!!!!!!!!!
Seeking Him with
all my heart,
Sheila
