Trust
Psalm
22:1-21
English Standard Version (ESV)
To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of
David.
22 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
3 Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises[a] of Israel.
4 In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5 To you they cried and were rescued;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
enthroned on the praises[a] of Israel.
4 In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5 To you they cried and were rescued;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
6 But I am a worm
and not a man,
scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
7 All who see me mock me;
they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
8 “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him;
let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
7 All who see me mock me;
they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
8 “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him;
let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
9 Yet you are he
who took me from the womb;
you made me trust you at my mother's breasts.
10 On you was I cast from my birth,
and from my mother's womb you have been my God.
11 Be not far from me,
for trouble is near,
and there is none to help.
you made me trust you at my mother's breasts.
10 On you was I cast from my birth,
and from my mother's womb you have been my God.
11 Be not far from me,
for trouble is near,
and there is none to help.
12 Many bulls
encompass me;
strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
13 they open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.
strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
13 they open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.
14 I am poured
out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like wax;
it is melted within my breast;
15 my strength is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.
and all my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like wax;
it is melted within my breast;
15 my strength is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.
16 For dogs
encompass me;
a company of evildoers encircles me;
they have pierced my hands and feet[b]—
17 I can count all my bones—
they stare and gloat over me;
18 they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.
a company of evildoers encircles me;
they have pierced my hands and feet[b]—
17 I can count all my bones—
they stare and gloat over me;
18 they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.
19 But you, O Lord, do
not be far off!
O you my help, come quickly to my aid!
20 Deliver my soul from the sword,
my precious life from the power of the dog!
21 Save me from the mouth of the lion!
You have rescued[c] me from the horns of the wild oxen!
O you my help, come quickly to my aid!
20 Deliver my soul from the sword,
my precious life from the power of the dog!
21 Save me from the mouth of the lion!
You have rescued[c] me from the horns of the wild oxen!
Have
you ever felt that God has forsaken you?
Have you felt that God did not care about you? Have you ever wondered why He might have put
you in a home where you learned from day one to trust in Him but yet He has
turned His back on you? If you have ever
felt that way you need to understand that you are not alone. If you have ever felt that way you need to
know that the direct cause of that feeling is because of sin.
Although
David may have been having these thoughts, this scripture is actual prophecy of
the coming Messiah. As Christ hung on
the cross He quoted these words, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” If you continue reading you will see that
everything that is in this scripture can be compared with what is recorded in
the Gospels regarding the crucifixion of Christ. We know that Jesus cried to the Lord day and
night. While others were sleeping He
could not sleep because of what was about to happen to Him. We know that Jesus was beat, spat upon,
ridiculed and mock. We know that His
clothes were divided up amongst the soldiers.
We know that they pierced His hands and His feet. One other thing we know is that God was never
far from Him. All of this happened
because Jesus took the sin of the world upon Himself.
Lack
of trust in the Lord is a result of sin in our lives. We may say we trust Him but when the weight
of sin comes upon us in the disguise of misfortune, ridicule, loss of
friendship, etc., how do we respond? Do
we call upon the Lord to save us? If He
doesn’t, do we still love Him and trust that He is in control or do we
complain? I myself find that I
complain. I complain to Him, I complain
to others. I seem to think that I have
earned the right to have Him give me an answer that pleases me. After all I was raised in a Christian home
and have always trusted the Lord. Well,
it didn’t work that way for Jesus and I should not expect it to work that way
for me. One thing I do know is that
because of Jesus suffering, I am alive in Christ today. I hope that because of my suffering others
may know Christ.
As
you seek Him may you know that because of the suffering of Christ, you have
hope.
Seeking
Him with all my heart,
Sheila
