What Should We Pray

Psalm 140 English Standard Version (ESV)
Deliver Me, O Lord, from Evil Men
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.
140
Deliver me, O Lord, from evil men;
    preserve me from violent men,
who plan evil things in their heart
    and stir up wars continually.
They make their tongue sharp as a serpent's,
    and under their lips is the venom of asps. Selah
Guard me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
    preserve me from violent men,
    who have planned to trip up my feet.
The arrogant have hidden a trap for me,
    and with cords they have spread a net;[a]    beside the way they have set snares for me. Selah
I say to the Lord, You are my God;
    give ear to the voice of my pleas for mercy, O Lord!
O Lord, my Lord, the strength of my salvation,
    you have covered my head in the day of battle.
Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked;
    do not further their[b] evil plot, or they will be exalted! Selah
As for the head of those who surround me,
    let the mischief of their lips overwhelm them!
10
Let burning coals fall upon them!
    Let them be cast into fire,
    into miry pits, no more to rise!
11
Let not the slanderer be established in the land;
    let evil hunt down the violent man speedily!
12
I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted,
    and will execute justice for the needy.
13
Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name;
    the upright shall dwell in your presence.

Sometimes I wonder why David had to endure such pain and agony.  I understand that when the Israelites turned from God and worshipped other gods how the One true God had to help them realize who He was.  He did that through placing them in exile or causing them to wander in the desert for 40 years.  Yet, David, a humble man, appointed by God to be king, has to run for His life because of an evil king.  Then I think, that is why David was a man after God’s own heart.  He would cry to God when He was in trouble.  David didn’t put his trust in man but rather God.  When David did messed up he didn’t make excuses for himself, rather, he confessed to God.

Often times when trials and tribulations come our way we cry to God and our words are, “Why?” ; “Why me?”; “Why my loved one?” and the answer is always because of a fallen world.  When sin entered this world, it was no longer perfect.  Sin of mankind affects us all.  Our cry should be the cry of David to wipe the enemy out of this world and far from us.

At some point, the righteous will see justice but until that time we must continue to remain strong in Him.  We must remember to put our trust in the One True God not in the circumstances of life.  Life will happen, trouble will come, but our God will sustain His people.  He will ultimately give us a place where there will no longer be any suffering.  We can remain strong by trusting Him and seeking Him with all our heart.

Seeking Him with all my heart,

Sheila
