We Need a Savior to Rule

Matthew 2
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Visit of the Wise Men
2 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men[a] from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose[b] and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
The Flight to Egypt
13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
Herod Kills the Children
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:
18 “A voice was heard in Ramah,
    weeping and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”
The Return to Nazareth
19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead.” 21 And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. 23 And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.

Study

You may wonder why I used such a long passage today but I didn’t know where to cut it off so decided to just put in the entire passage.

As I sat and looked at the news on my phone today I read a remark from the President of the United States that really bothered me.  Quoting from a CNN opinion page by Paul Begala,  ‘“We are not a fragile or frightful people,”  the President declared, “Our power doesn’t come from some self-declared savior promising that he alone can restore order.  We don’t look to be ruled.”’ Now the President was speaking, regarding Trump, however, the report I read never said if the President indicated where our power does come from.

Herod the King did not want to be threatened by a King, a little baby boy, so he had all the baby boys killed.  It didn’t stop there.  The Jewish leaders convinced the rulers of nation to kill Jesus later on, as a grown man, crucify Him on the cross because they feared being ruled by a Savior.

He, Jesus Christ is our Savior.  We do need to live and fear of Him.  We do need to be a frightful people because someday He will return and He will show His power and majesty.  I will be on His side because of my fear and frightful, humble, and loving attitude towards Him.  I do recognize I do not have the power within me to rule myself, let alone a nation.  I can do nothing without out Him and everything with Him.  I recognize I am not strong enough to do all good on my own.  I do realize I need my Savior to restore order.  There is no one on the face of the earth that can restore the chaos that is in this world of ours.  Only the LORD and SAVIOR, the LORD of lords, the KING of kings can and will restore order in His time.

Yes, American, we are weak, we have no human power to restore order but we do have a Savior who has blessed our nation for many years.  I pray the power of our Lord and Savior and His favor will rest upon us and bring us His strength to endure until His return.  Without God we are nothing.

Pray for our nation, pray for our leaders, pray for our election, pray for the candidates, pray that we will all know and recognize our weakness and the great strength of our Lord and Savior.

Seek Him America, and call upon His name!

Seeking Him with all my heart,
Sheila

Why I Write

1 Thessalonians 2:1-8
English Standard Version (ESV)
2 For you yourselves know, brothers,[a] that our coming to you was not in vain. But though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we had boldness in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of much conflict. For our appeal does not spring from error or impurity or any attempt to deceive, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts. For we never came with words of flattery,[b] as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness. Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle[c] among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.

As I read this I had to think about why I do what I do.  Why do I write this blog?  Is it to bring glory to me or is it to bring glory to God.  I often times look at the stats on my blog and it is not because of the number of readers that read my blog that thrills me.  In fact, I wish more would read it because I would know more were seeking God in their lives.  I am always thrilled because I know that people, not only in the United States are reading this but also abroad.  I do not know what lives are being touched or changed.  I don’t know what words are transforming but I know that my God uses His Words to prick our hearts and I am sure, even if nothing that I write changes anyone, the Words that I share from the Word of God should.

Paul was persecuted, his life threatened daily, yet he continued to preach the Gospel.  How many of us would try to do so more discretely or maybe not at all?  Yet Paul was bold in his proclamation of Jesus Christ.  He certainly did not do it to get approval from man but that the Gospel could be spread.

My prayer today for this and every blog that I have written is that the Word of God, through this blog, will bring glory to God and not to me.  Yes, I want everyone to read it, I want a large group of people seeking God in their lives.  No, I am not looking to be famous or to have large numbers of followers.  I want God to have a large number of followers who find strength in His Word.  If by the Words that I write, like the Words that Paul wrote, I am persecuted, may it bring glory and praise to our Father above.

May God bless you and keep you as you seek to know Him more.

Seeking Him with all my heart,

Sheila

Difficult Times

2 Timothy 3:1
English Standard Version (ESV)
3 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.

2 Timothy 3:12-17

English Standard Version (ESV)

12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom[a] you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God[b] may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Often times when troubles come our way we look to God.  Sometimes we look to God and ask Him, “Why?” and other times will seek out His comfort.  The, “why?” is pretty apparent, it is not because of Him it is because of our sinful nature.  There is not one of  us who has not sinned against God.  Sinning is simply, “Anything that we think, say, or do that displeases God” a phrase taught to me through Child Evangelism Fellowship.  If we have ever displeased God in any shape or form we have sinned.  There is no one to blame but ourselves when we sin.  We might try to blame Eve or Adam but if it hadn’t have been them it would have been someone else, maybe even me, that would have let curiosity get the best of him or her.

So, here we are, in a world that seems to have gone mad.  What do we do about it?  There seems to be lots of suggestions.  We hear, get rid of guns, keep guns, become tight on immigration, monitor people more closely, etc.   The Word of God on the other hand tells us to expect it.  The Word of God tells us to remember whose we are.  It tells us to remember the Words that come directly from God into our hearts and minds.  We need to continue to use scripture to teach, reproof, correct, and train us so that we can be righteous, not self-righteous but righteous through Him.

Hold on to your faith, in times of uncertainty.  God has let us know that these things will happen.  Turn to Him, seek Him through His Word, with all your heart, so that you may know that He is Lord of Lords, Ruler over all, King of all Kings.

Seeking Him with all my heart,

Sheila

Faith in What?

Romans 10:17
New International Version (NIV)
17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:18
New International Version (NIV)
18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Hebrews 11:1
New International Version (NIV)
11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

1 Timothy 1:14
New International Version (NIV)
14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

1 Timothy 1:18-19New International Version (NIV)
18 Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well, 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.

2 Peter 1:5-11
New International Version (NIV)
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters,[a] make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

As I have been researching faith, believing my faith needs to be stronger, I realized something that I found profound.  My faith is strong enough because I my faith is based on my hope and trust in the Lord for my forever after, not the present.  I have been told that worry is a lack of faith.  After hearing that, I felt that my faith was so weak because I find myself fretting about things that I should not fret about.  The Bible is clear that we should be free of worry.  As I myself view it, worry is not a lack of faith because faith is grounded in the hereafter not the present.   However, if I can have faith in a future life, that I have not seen, that faith should hold true in the present life as well and I should, by all means, not worry.  Yet, my faith is in Christ Jesus not in this world and the things of this world.  I may be disappointed at the way things turn out on this earth but my faith holds strong through Christ Jesus my Lord, this life is only temporary.  I know my future is bright in Him.  Faith does not mean that everything I want will be mine if I abide in Christ.  It means that my everything is Christ.  I am free in Him.

This journey of trying to make my faith stronger has rather allowed me to see that my faith is strong enough.  My faith is not in this world or the people of this world, it is with Christ Jesus my Lord.  Since I have this faith, I need to add to it as II Peter tells us.  Virtues such as these spreads that faith to others.  May you see in me the light of Christ so that you too may believe.

Seek Him and know that faith in Him is all you need. Today will pass but our future is bright and everlasting in Him.  Base you faith on this and not of the things of this world.

Seeking Him with all my heart,

Sheila

Live by Faith

Romans 1:16-17
English Standard Version (ESV)

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith,[a] as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

If you have ever trusted in the Lord to be your Savior, believed that you are a sinner, repented of your sins, and asked for forgiveness, you did that by faith.  I did that by faith at a young age.  If we have indeed asked God to be Lord of our lives, through faith in His Son Jesus Christ, then we have demonstrated that we have faith.  However, our faith should not end there, we must daily be reminded that our hope, our trust, all that we are, remains in Him. It is the only hope that we have in a troubled world.  Live by faith, not by sight.  Remember that God remains in control.

Seek Him and know that He and He alone is worthy to place your faith in.

Seeking Him with all my heart,

Sheila

Faith or Disaster?

Luke 18:1-8
English Standard Version (ESV)

18 And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

As I read this I had to think back on those things that I have persistently prayed for and must admit it has not been for my adversaries and that justice will be done.  Often times we try to take care of that on our own.  We may speak ill of others to our friends and families, maybe publicly or on social media.  What we should be doing is praying to our Father in Heaven for them and for ourselves that we may wait upon Him rather than take action on our own.  Now, that’s easy to say but harder to put into practice.  My challenge is to remember to pray for those who persecute Christians, that God’s justice will soon be revealed.  Praying for the strength of those being persecuted, asking for justice, and waiting on the Lord, these are keys to a life filled with faith.  If we continue in this way, the Son of Man will find faith on earth rather than disaster when He returns.

Seek Him and know that He is Just.

Seeing Him with all my heart,

Sheila

Have Faith

Luke 17:5-6
English Standard Version (ESV)

Increase Our Faith
The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

As I read this I got caught on the fact that Jesus that if we have faith that we can uproot a tree and thought, how little faith I have.  Just the other day I prayed for clear skies so my daughter’s community outdoor event would not be rained out but yet it rained and we were all having to help get people and food out of the rain while it thundered and lightened above us.  Did I not have enough faith or did God just have other plans for the picnic?  When I read  this again today, I had another thought!  The first part of the verse you read that the apostles were asking the Lord for faith.  His answer to that is that we need to just do it.  This is not something he is going to just give us but rather it is a work of action on our part.  Just like the Nike commercial, “Just Do It!”  The responsibility of our faith is on our shoulders not God’s shoulders.  As you seek Him, live a life that allows your faith to increase as you use it for His glory.

Seeking Him with all my heart,
 Sheila

Contagious with Joyful Praise

 Habakkuk 2:4English Standard Version (ESV)
“Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him,
but the righteous shall live by his faith.[1]

Puffer fish are slow moving, clumsy fish that can be found in the ocean.  When a predator approaches, a puffer fish will expand in size taking in water and air to make itself huge and unappealing to the predator. If a predator does catch one of these fish before they expand, they will find that the fish is extremely poisonous and was a mistake to eat![2]  I believe this is a good example of a prideful person.  When attacked they may puff themselves up trying to repel the negative comments coming their way.  If, on the other hand, people unaware of the prideful soul, connect with them, they may only to find out this prideful person is poisonous, nasty, and dangerous.

I’ve never considered myself a prideful person but the more I examine faith and pride, I tend to lean heavier on the pride side than the faith side.  If I am attacked or rejected I may not puff myself up but I do start to wonder what is wrong with me.  Why am I being attacked?  Why doesn’t anyone like me?  Why am I not good enough?  A person who has faith and depends on God rather than their own actions will be content and joyful in the situation that can bring a prideful person down.

As I seek Him more and more, I want my faith to shine above my pride.  I don’t want to be poisonous with prideful venom but rather contagious with joyful praise.

Seek Him and know that faith will get you through.  Wait patiently on the Lord as He works amazing wonders in your life.

Seeking Him with all my heart,

Sheila

We are not Worthy but He is Willing

Luke 7:2-10

English Standard Version (ESV)
Now a centurion had a servant who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him. When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us our synagogue.” And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed. For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” 10 And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.

If you lookup the word “Worthy” on a Google search you will find lots of sayings that indicate that we are worthy.  The centurion in Luke 7: 5 had it correct when he said, “I am not worthy”.

In our world today we seem to think that God owes us everything.  We tend to believe that love equals getting anything and everything that we want.  I am guilty of promoting this as a mom and grandma.  If I am able to give my children anything that they want, I will do it but I am not always able.  God shows His love to us in a different way.  He gives us what we need and sometimes what we want in order to bring Him glory.  If we never had a want, there would be no reason to ask.  If we never had a desire there would be no communion with Him.

What is amazing to me is that even in our sinful state, even when we are not worthy to go to the throne of God, He is willing and waiting for us to do so.  We are not worthy of such honor, it is a gift from God that we have it.

Next time I think I need or want something (which will probably be in the next few minutes) I hope to keep in mind that I am not worthy to ask but God is willing to listen and act upon my plea.  I also hope to remember that the centurion sent others to petition to Jesus.  How often do I do this for my friends and how often do I ask them to do it for me.  We must pray and petition to God on behalf of our friends, our bosses, our family and yes, even our enemy.

Commune with God as you seek Him with all your heart.

Seeking Him with all my heart,
Sheila

Faith = Belief

As I began reading today I decided that I wanted to go to scripture and search scriptures on faith.  This seems to be an area that I lack in on many parts.  I do have faith that I will someday see my Savior.  I believe that someday the life that I now know will be gone but there will be a far better life after this one is over.  This faith sustains me throughout trials, tribulations, and the loss of loved ones.  However, often times I find myself praying and trying to believe but doubting that  my prayer for whatever I am praying for will actually come to fruition.  This results in frustration, discouragement, and even despair.

The first scripture on faith that I decided to look at today is found in Mark 11.  The first part of the scripture sets the stage and the second part of the scriptures gives us an explanation as to why this all happened.
Mark 11:12-14English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus Curses the Fig Tree
12 On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. 13 And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.
I never could fully understand why Jesus would do this to a tree when it was just not time for it to bear fruit.  However, the last part of verse 14 gives us the reason, He wanted His disciples to hear this because He had a lesson for them later on.  He also wanted us to hear these words.
As we continue reading, we find out the reason for the curse on this poor tree:

The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree

20 As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. 21 And Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” 22 And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. 23 Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received[a] it, and it will be yours. 25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

The Holy Bible, English Standard Version Copyright © 2001 by Crossway Bibles, a publishing ministry of Good News Publish
We must believe that what we ask will come to pass.  If there is doubt in our hearts, we may need to learn a little bit more about faith and continue to pray that God will give us the faith we need to be one with Him.  As I seek Him and desire to be one that will pray as the Father would have me pray, I will examine my heart more closely and look for and rid it of the doubt that lies within.
Seeking Him with all my heart,
Sheila

His Will

It has been awhile since I last posted.  I started back to work in August and it seems like the time to sit down and write out my thoughts has been limited.  It may be that I just have not taken the time to do so.

I’m at a point in my life that I do not know what my dreams are and if I even have dreams for the future in this world anyway.  It seems those dreams that I have had for my future have been rejected.  I thought they might be put on hold but more and more I believe they are just plain rejected.  This may be a sign that they are my dreams but not what God has planned for me.  I have struggled with not being in tune with God’s will for my life and that is why I started this blog.  I felt that if my dreams were not in tune with His, I must not know God very well and I had better start seeking Him more intensely so that I could find Him and be satisfied with my life.

So, why, after all the seeking am I still seeking to know Him better and still doubting that I do?  For the most part, there is so much more to God than we can ever truly know.  Just recently I attended an ordination service for a pastor in our church.  As he stated his viewpoints on many theological questions, it became even more clear to me that we really, not any of us, really know the fullness of God.  We have interpretations of the Bible, yet none of us really know all the answers.  Pastors from other churches were there to witness and give their input on his answers.  Obviously, they did not all agree with his viewpoints yet recognized it was an opinion.
With all that in mind, I know that we must continually seek His will in our lives and be satisfied that His will is going to be done whether we like it or not.  Just as Christ suffered in the garden and prayed, 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”  Matthew 26:39 , we too must follow the will of the Father.  Our goal in this life should be to honor and glorify God yet we get caught up in the life, striving for our dreams, waiting for them, watching for them, thinking that the lottery ticket of a successful life is just around the corner, and we forget that God is right there with us, wanting us to cling to Him and live a life that is pleasing to Him.  What are we doing?  Where are we going?  Why have we been placed here at this time to live?  As we seek Him and know Him, we realize it is His will and His timing is the better than any dreams that we could dream for ourselves.
Seek Him and know that He will is good.

Seeking Him with all my heart,
Sheila
