Clean out the Basement

Acts 4:32-37
New International Version (NIV)

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.
36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.

What an ideal setting this would be!  If we could all be of the same mind and we would all be willing to give all for the cause of Christ.  We live in such separated worlds, even though we are in the same community,  and only come together to worship once a week.  Some work hard through the week while others hardly work.  Those that work hard deserve their hard earned paychecks and those who don’t deserve starvation.  That is the way of the world and sadly, the way of the church as well.

I find it rather interesting that people will look at the way the early church does things and say we need to be more like the early church.  Then when we get to this passage they seem to skip over it.  I think it is rather cool how they worked together to help one another out but am I willing to give all my possessions away.  I have a basement full of “stuff” that needs to get taken to the dumpster or given away but it remains in the basement.  Why is it that we hold on to “things”?  We need to clean out our basements and be about the work of the Lord.

Seek Him and know that He is God.

Seeking Him with all my heart,

Sheila
