Light in Darkness

Psalm 142 English Standard Version (ESV)
A Maskil[a] of David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer.
142
With my voice I cry out to the Lord;
    with my voice I plead for mercy to the Lord.
I pour out my complaint before him;
    I tell my trouble before him.
When my spirit faints within me,
    you know my way!
In the path where I walk
    they have hidden a trap for me.
Look to the right and see:
    there is none who takes notice of me;
no refuge remains to me;
    no one cares for my soul.
I cry to you, O Lord;
    I say, “You are my refuge,
    my portion in the land of the living.”
Attend to my cry,
    for I am brought very low!
Deliver me from my persecutors,
    for they are too strong for me!
Bring me out of prison,
    that I may give thanks to your name!
The righteous will surround me,
    for you will deal bountifully with me.

David was in the depths of a cave, hiding from the king who was trying to kill him.  He was in essence locked away from the world.  He was not free to roam about without fear of being captured.  David cried and complained to the Lord regarding his situation.  He had faith that the Lord would free him from this despair.

Now let’s look at our lives.  When we get brought down to the bottom and this is no one around us that we can trust, do we put our trust in God?  Who do we cry out to?  Who do we complain to?  Do we ask Him to surround us with righteous people?   Do we have faith in Him?  Do we expect Him to deal with us bountifully?

If we call on Him rather than man, we are acting out of faith.  Life is hard whether you are a believer or unbeliever but for those who have no hope or a future beyond this life, I would think that hurt and despair would be unbearable.

No matter where we are in life, we need the One True God to see us through.  To guide us, protect us, and give us strength.  As we sit in the darkness of this world, no matter what our prison may be, let us pray that God will surround us with righteous people.  When we find ourselves in places we don’t want to be, let’s make sure we invite God to surround us and give us peace.  Seek Him and know that He is light amongst darkness.

Seeking Him with all my heart,

Sheila
