Fear God

Psalm 119:113-120
English Standard Version (ESV)

Samekh
113
I hate the double-minded,
    but I love your law.
114
You are my hiding place and my shield;
    I hope in your word.
115
Depart from me, you evildoers,
that I may keep the commandments of my God.
116
Uphold me according to your promise, that I may live,
and let me not be put to shame in my hope!
117
Hold me up, that I may be safe
and have regard for your statutes continually!
118
You spurn all who go astray from your statutes,
for their cunning is in vain.
119
All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross,
    therefore I love your testimonies.
120
My flesh trembles for fear of you,
and I am afraid of your judgments.

I have always told my children and students that they should choose friends that bring out the best in them, not the worst in them.  I believe this passage speaks of this as well as David recognizes that some people are possibly a little “two faced”.  They may say they are loyal to God, yet at the same time, they cannot seems to find time for Him.  All of us have probably been there at some point in our lives but if we truly love Him we will find the time to have Him in our lives.

Often times I think we forget about the fact that we need to fear God.  I hear more and more songs today about how much God loves us and less and less about how we should fear Him.  I remember as a child that much of my good behavior came about because I feared my dad.  Not in a negative way, I knew how much he loved me and I wanted to please him but I also knew there would be consequences to my bad behavior.  I believe that is a godly example of how we need to also view our Heavenly Father.  We know that He loves us, we want to please Him, yet we should fear the consequences of not placing Him first in our lives.  We need to seek Him and know that He is God and is worthy of our praise as well as our trembling fear.

Seeking Him with all my heart,

Sheila
