Even the Mountains Tremble, What About Us?

Psalm 114
English Standard Version (ESV)

114 When (A)Israel went out from Egypt,
the house of Jacob from (B)a people of strange language,
Judah became his (C)sanctuary,
    Israel his dominion.
(D)The sea looked and fled;
    (E)Jordan turned back.
(F)The mountains skipped like rams,
    the hills like lambs.
What (G)ails you, O sea, that you flee?
O Jordan, that you turn back?
O mountains, that you skip like rams?
    O hills, like lambs?
(H)Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turns (I)the rock into (J)a pool of water,
(K)the flint into a spring of water.

As we go about our day today and every day, we need to be aware of God’s presence and we need to be aware of His mighty power.  I remember a commercial a few years ago where I man got out of his car and told his dog to “stay”.  He had left his drink (a drink or food)  in the front so when he got out the dog went and took a drink and quickly got back in his place before the owner came back.  I think that is what we think we do with God.  We live our lives the way we want to, we make puns at the things of God, and we don’t think He is watching.  But, unlike the human in the illustration, God is always watching and He knows our every move.

We, the human race, created by God, with the largest, most active brain, cannot recognize God.  He has made us so intelligent that we think that we know more than Him or we try to reason His existence , yet the birds recognize Him even the mountains tremble at His voice.  Why is it then that we can’t or won’t recognize Him?  Why is it that people can do or say offensive things and apologize to me but they don’t think about what the Lord thinks of it. They don’t even realize He is in the room too.  At Christmas time we can get kids to obey because we say Santa is watching and they quickly turn their attitude around. What if we told ourselves that God is watching, because He really is, would our attitude change like the child’s?

I often say, do what is right when you think no one is watching.  That is not an inaccurate statement, rather, do what is right, knowing that God is always watching.  I don’t need to fear man but I do need to fear God.  He knows all, sees all, hears all, so, what are we saying and doing?  So many people worry about “big brother” watching when they should be more concerned that God is watching.  Is there anything that you would be ashamed for Him to hear or see?  Seek Him and know that He is watching and He cares for you.

Seeking Him with all my heart,

Sheila
